Faith in Faith or Faith In Him

April 19, 2010 at 7:40 pm (faith)

In his March/April newsletter GraceVine, Steve McVey states some Christians think faith is believing hard enough so things will turn out alright.  “Their faith is in faith.”    I have come across some people and heard some ministers who put their faith in faith.

You know, I have a agnostic boss.  He tells me from time to time that having “faith” is a good thing.   “Faith” as he will state to me can helps us in rough situations.   So every time I’ve walked away from his office after one of these talks my thought always is “faith” will not save you.   The Lord does.   Kind of like years ago the pencils in the pews used to write on prayer request cards had the message “Prayer changes things”    Likewise I would often think, no it doesn’t.   The Lord  changes things.

As Steve puts it in the same article, the questions is:

Will you trust Him?

Biblical faith is believing in Him – period!

What or who is the object or of your faith?

    Amen!! I learned this lesson last year when I realized much of my faith had been misplaced, and I was actually living in unbelief. The difference seems minor when written, but how it affects our lives is absolutely altering.

    Hi Sherie!! It’s been a really long time. I am discovering anxieties and other things I haven’t been casting on Him. I am also discovering I have a very narrow view of His love and care for me. (1 Peter 5:7) It’s unnerving isn’t it…

    All this came out of 2 prayers I’ve prayed since December 2009. (1) I asked the Lord to bring me into closer intimacy with Him. (2) I asked Him to: Search me, and know my heart;
    To try me and know my anxious thoughts;
    And see if there was any hurtful way in me,
    to lead me in the everlasting way. ( Paraphrase PS 139:23-24)
    Boy, have I gotten an ear full. But I am thankful for His faithfulness.

    I too have experienced that. When we honestly seek him with an open heart that is willing to receive he will teach and guide us. I learned that my faith was more in faith itself than it was in God, and as I corrected that the truth of the Gospel overwhelmed and forever altered me. I like your word….unnerving.

    I have spent this last year concentrating on learning about three things:
    1) The character of God – His identity – Who he truly is, not who I thought he is
    2) Who I am – My identity – Who he says I am now that I am in relationship with him
    3) How unbelief and disobedience affect those identities and how we relate to each other and how to change my ways to walk in right relationship and believing truth.

    I am so glad to hear you are learning and growing! I am sure there have been difficult moments but it is exciting to see God at work in your life.
